Big Ideas

Here, Will Wilkinson of Cato talks about the important role cynicism plays in politics. He rightly states that if we had a little more cynicism on 9/12/01, we might not be in our current state of affairs. But there is nothing you can do about the past. As he points out, that Obama outlined the necessity of "big ideas" for America and this is where we went astray. While the US is a country and should be a country of "big ideas" the government should not be the driving force of those ideas. They should stand aside and allow the people to stand up and realize big ideas.

The role of government is not to drive big ideas, but to protect them. If I create the iWidget, the government should protect my property rights and associated patents (for a reasonable period of time). The state's sole role is that of protectorate, not the role of financier, inventor, and producer.
