Well, this is a whole new thing for me. I never was one much for journaling, so I am not too hopeful for this but we'll see.
I recently just finish Thomas DiLorenzo's book, Hamilton's Curse. It was an interesting insight into how far we have drifted from what the Founding Fathers (at least some of them) had originally intended the country to become. I think too often we forget that this country was to be a Republic and that the Constitution was to protect we, the citizens, from the government not protect the institution of government. That the Federal Government was to protect our inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It wasn't to provide us with jobs. It wasn't to provide a stamp of approval for investments. It wasn't to give us retirement funds. It was to make sure that you don't kill me, I don't kill you, provide the right to own property, and to protect us all from foreign threats.
This reminds me of a quote from Rand, where she states, "The only proper functions of a government are: the police, to protect you from criminals; the army, to protect you from foreign invaders; and the courts, to protect your property and contracts from breach or fraud by others, to settle disputes by rational rules, according to objective law." That pretty much sums up my views of the role of a proper government.
