Lady Justice is Peeking

Justice is blind right? If you believe that, then I have some prime real estate in Florida and a bridge in New York to sell to you. Justice is supposed to be doled out without regard to race, color, gender, or sexual orientation. Punishment is supposed imposed equitably, correct? But we all know that those that believe in blind justice probably also believe in the tooth fairy.

Take this case from the same town in Wisconsin (courtesy of The Daily Beast). Two 17-year-olds are arrested for having sex with their respective 14-year-old significant others. One 17 -year-old is charged with a Class C Felony, which carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in jail. The other 17-year-old is charged with a misdemeanor, which carries a maximum sentence of 9 months in jail. Same town, same District Attorney, same crime, same ages, vastly different charges. So what's the difference? The teen charged with a felony was a 17-year-old male who had sex with his 14-year-old girlfriend, and the teen charged with a misdemeanor was a 17-year-old female who had sex with her 14-year-old boyfriend.

This type of blatant bias are things that I thought we, as a country, had over come years ago. I thought we were living in a land and a time, where decisions were based not on gender, race, and color and more on the facts. I had thought that were finally were going to start making judgments based less on our own bigoted, biases and more on what is right and just. Well, I guess I was wrong. Equal crime should carry equal time. But I guess I am in naive one....Hey, I have to go...The tooth fairy just showed up and she's interested in buying my bridge in New York...
